Face Rig How to

Phoneme Controls

By manipulating the sphere control, each axis can morph the mouth into a different phoneme, combining them together by moving the ball across axis can produce a mix of phonemes. Scaling the ball across axis works as well and produces the CH phoneme and modifies the tounge.

The phonemes are listed on the controller itself for reference.

Jaw and Phoneme extra controls

The jaw has two controls, the primary jaw control (green) controls the overall movement of the jaw without affecting the mouth, the ACT control (blue) acts as a jaw open/close action that is driven via action constraints

Next to the phoneme controls there are two sidebar controls that govern the influence of the phoneme and ACT controls on the mouth itself.

Stretch Controls

Stretch controls act as tweak controls for fine tuning, its best to move these in pairs especially stretch bones at the end of the chain as stretch bones can resize areas drastically. Stretch controls can also be scaled along the y axis to control the tangent of the deformation bones.

Primary and Secondary Mouth Controls

The mouth contains three groups of controls

Primary (green): These mouth controls primarily focus on the lips and follow a cascading structure, the outer controls control the lips as a whole while the inner control more granular parts of the lips.

Secondary (red): The secondary mouth controls control the placement of the mouth on the face as a whole

Primary and Secondary Eye Controls

ACT - (Blue)

his controls the action constraints of the eyes, moving along the y axis controls the blink of the eye, there is both a top and bottom control for each eyelid. moving together also works seamlessly. Moving the control along the y axis away from the eye results in the lid widening.

Primary - (Green)

The primary controls for the eye controls the iris independently of the eye aiming system the eye target uses below, this can be used the fine tune the position of the iris for any angle. Included as children of the iris control is a pupil control (if the model has a pupil that is seperate, this isn't always the case) and highlight controls.

Eye Target - (Green)

The eye target controls sit in front of the face. Scaling the eye master target (the large rectangular control) controls the position of eyes while scaling the individual eye target controls the scale of the iris and their individual positions.

Stretch - (Yellow)

Stretch bones, no alternative behaviours from other stretch bones. its important to note that the chain of the eyelid is not one but two, and the ends of these chains are noted by half spheres, when manipulating these controls its important to be careful not to seperate them too far from their proceeding bone as this can resort in heavy scaling which warps the weighting.

Eyebrow Controls

ACT - (Blue)

This controls the action constraints of the eyebrows, moving along the x axis controls the horizontal angle of the eyebrow, moving along the y axis controls the bend of the chain, combining them together results in a lot of different poses.

Primary - (Green)

This is the master control for the entire bone chain, moving this moves the whole chain as one.

Stretch - (Yellow)

Stretch bones, no alternative behaviours from other stretch bones

Eyebrow Stretch (Purple)

This controls the secondary chain, the secondary chain exists alongside the primary chain and is deformed by it, but the secondary chain is responsible for deforming only the eyebrow mesh and not the face. This can be used to push the deformation of the eyebrow mesh further than the face mesh allows, i.e overlapping the eyebrow mesh over the eyes partially for stylisation.
